In most areas of the United States, squash seeds should be planted at the end of May or beginning of June to avoid colder weather. You can also start watermelon seeds inside and then transplant the seedlings once the weather warms up. Create small mounds of dirt about three inches high and plant one to three seeds in each mound. As the seedlings emerge, thin out the plants to no more than one or two plants per mound.
Put in good compost or aged manure, cover with good dirt, make a mound, drop in 5 seeds, cover with more dirt, pat down and water gently but thoroughly. Don't let the mound dry out, don't move the long vines. Don't worry about weeds or grass, none of that will bother the melons and the more cover they have the more likely they will grow.
Mulching Watermelons
You can sow watermelons directly into the ground when the soil temperature is above 65°F. Plant seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep, placing two or three seeds in groups 18 to 24 inches apart. Once watermelon seedlings are established, remove two and leave the best watermelon plant in each group. When planting watermelon you can either plant seeds or transplants; just be careful with transplants as watermelons have sensitive roots.
Apply water to 1-foot depth to insure deeper rooting. If plants are stressed for water when they start to set fruit, the melons will be small and rot will increase. If plants get too much water, it may cause fruit to split.
How to Grow
Check the underside of the melon, which turns from light green or white to cream colored or yellow when ripe. Keeping insects under control is important not only because these pests can chew up your plants, but because they can also spread disease. Plants grow to inches tall with vines spreading inches, and they have some resistance to fusarium wilt and good resistance to three races of anthracnose. Depending on how this number compares to the number of days in your growing season, you may want to start your plants indoors instead of direct sowing. In the case of a broken or damaged root, the plant may never recover, or it may grow slowly all season, leading to a disappointing harvest. Watermelon plants have separate male and female flowers so bees are required for pollination. Thin each planting mound to no more than two melons for best results. Your yield will be small if you don’t keep watermelons irrigated.
Watermelon Growing Requirements
Small, oblong fruit similar to Charleston Gray except for the smaller size of fruit and vine; weighs10 to 13 pounds. After your seeds are planted, you’ll need to remember to water them daily until the seedlings sprout and start to show some small leaves. Once they reach this stage, they won’t need as much water as long as you continue to water them consistently.

Start your watermelon seeds late in the spring, or at least two weeks after the last frost. They will need at least three months of warm weather to grow.
